In 1785, through an act by the South Carolina legislature, Spartanburg County was officially formed from the Ninety-Six District. The county's first court session took place on the third Monday in June of that year at Nichols' Mill, along the banks of the North Tyger River. During this session, a vote appointed Mr. William Young as Spartanburg County's first Sheriff.

Later that year, the second court session convened on the third Monday in September at Thomas Williamson’s plantation, the site of modern-day Spartanburg. At this session, Sheriff Young presented his commission, signed by the Governor, and was formally sworn into office.

Since Sheriff Young's swearing-in in 1785, forty different men have served as Sheriff of Spartanburg County.
