Spartanburg County, South Carolina consists of 819.74 square miles, and was formed in 1785. Spartanburg was named after the Spartan Rifles which was a local militia during the American Revolutionary War. At last count, Spartanburg County is home to 367,448 citizens with a make up of 20.29% Black or African American, 69.28% White, and 10.42% other minorities. Spartanburg County is located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in the northwestern part of the state.

Hiring Process

- Final hiring decision
Once hired, deputies attend the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy in Columbia for 12 weeks. Certified officers from other states may qualify for a six-week legal focus or challenge test. The Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office Field Training Program spans 604 hours and the probationary period is one year.
Starting Salary
- New hires with no experience: $49,942 annually (based on a 43-hour workweek).
- $5,000 sign-on bonus for class one certified officers.
- Qualifications that accelerate promotion:
- Associate's, Bachelor's, or Master's degree.
- At least 2 years of active-duty military service.
- Lateral Police Officer: Grade and pay step determined by experience and formal training.
