05/23/2019 - Arrest made in Campobello Murder

Earlier this morning at approx. 1:15 AM, deputies responded to 368 Patterson Rd., Campobello, SC, 29322, in regards to a shooting. The 911 caller told a dispatcher he had shot the victim. Upon arrival, deputies found a pickup truck facing the wrong way in the road with a white male standing beside it, and a black male lying in the road in front of the truck with a gunshot wound. EMS also responded to the scene and declared the victim deceased. The white male identified himself as the 911 caller, and he was detained without incident and transported to the office. The weapon used in the incident was recovered from inside the truck. Once at the office, the suspect told our investigators that he and the victim were friends, but the victim had threatened some members of his family, and that he went looking for him. An hour prior to the incident, the suspect went by victim’s residence and told some of the victim’s family members he was going to kill the victim. The suspect confessed that he shot victim once he found him walking down the road at the incident location. The suspect is Wayne Lee Fowler, W/M, 231 Mt. Lebanon Rd., Inman, SC, 29349, and he is charged with Murder and Possession of  a Weapon During the Commission of a Violent Crime. He was booked into the detention facility at approx. 6:00 AM this morning and is currently appearing before a magistrate for bond arraignment. Our investigation continues to determine a possible motive for this incident
