07/09/2014 - Student Arrested for Possession of Firearm on Campus

The Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office has arrested Kwame Obrian Fernanders, 20 years old, of Spartanburg, SC and has charged him with one count of Possession of a Weapon on School Property. The charge is in connection to an investigation by the Sheriff’s Office Violent Crimes Unit into a request made by the Spartanburg Community College Police Department. The Chief of Police of the SCC Police Department had received a tip that a student was carrying a handgun on school property. Investigators located the student and found that he was not in possession of a handgun. However, another student that came with him to school today, Mr. Fernanders, was in possession of a handgun.

Mr. Fernanders was arrested and transported to the Sheriff’s office and then to the detention center. He was booked in on the arrest warrant and three outstanding bench warrants issued by the City of Spartanburg Municipal Court on unrelated charges. Investigators do not believe that Mr. Fernanders intended to harm anyone at the college with the handgun. Mr. Fernanders is awaiting a bond hearing at a time to be set by the court.

The Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office and the Spartanburg Community College Police Department were able to work together to remove this student and the weapon in his possession from the cam-pus as part of the ongoing effort to keep students, faculty and staff safe.
