08/30/2013 - Robbery Suspect Shoots at Deputies

About 4:45 PM this afternoon deputies responded to a report of an Armed Robbery at the Family Dollar Store located at 630 Chesnee Highway. Responding deputies soon located the robbery suspect in the area along Barnwell Road. As deputies began to advance toward the suspect they came under fire from the suspect. A brief exchange of gunfire took place between the suspect and four deputies. The suspect fled into a fenced in area of a business located near the intersection of Barnwell Road and Greenhill Road. While the suspect was inside this fenced in area he suffered a self inflicted gunshot wound that took his life.

Sheriff Chuck Wright has asked the State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) to investigate this case due to there being deputies involved in firing their weapons. The names of the deputies involved are not being released at this time pending the notification of their family of their involvement in this type of incident. The name of the suspect is not being released pending the notification of the next of kin by the Spartanburg County Coroner’s Office.

We are thankful that no citizen or law enforcement officer was injured during this incident.
