Deputy 1st Class John William “Petey” Berry
Badge Number : S-701
End of Watch: September 19, 2021

It’s with heavy hearts that the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office announces the passing of one of our own. Deputy First Class John William “Petey” Berry passed away yesterday, September 19, 2021. Deputy Berry came to the SCSO in 2016 after serving with the Spartanburg City Police Dept from 2011-2016. Deputy Berry was part of the Special Services Division serving as a School Resource Officer at Drayton Mills Elementary School since 2017. Deputy Berry leaves behind a wife and two children.

Deputy Berry will be greatly missed, his smile, his personality, and his laughter could make anyone’s day brighter. Being an SRO in an elementary school Deputy Berry was able to share those traits with the children, undoubtedly touching many young lives. Please join Sheriff Wright and the entire SCSO family in remembering the family of Deputy Berry in your prayers.
“For the next few days you will see a stripe across the badges on many officers’ chest or belts. This stripe tells a story. The story began many years ago and has no end in sight. Ask the officer to tell you the story. There are tales of laughter and sadness. There are encounters with fear, evil, heroism, and compassion. You will learn about failures and celebrate triumphs. You will learn of a character that wasn’t perfect but tried everyday to love others and make a community a little better…Many refer to this book as The Brotherhood and this Chapter belongs to Petey Berry.” SCSO Deputy B Jonson, fellow SRO to Deputy Berry.
