01/27/2013 - SMC Student charged with Burglary and Attempted Sexual Misconduct

The Special Victims Unit of the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office has made an arrest in a burglary and attempted criminal sexual conduct incident that occurred early Friday morning, January 25, 2013, at Campus Core Apts. off of Valley Falls Rd. The suspect is Taylor Randall Childers, W/M, DOB; 010694, 2392 Cheek Pulliam Rd., Royston, GA, 30662. The suspect is a student at Spartanburg Methodist College, where he is also a member of the baseball team. Earlier in the evening, suspect and some other male students from Spartanburg Methodist had been at Campus Core Apartment with the victim and her friends.  After the males had left, suspect returned to victim’s apartment, illegally entered, and assaulted victim while she was asleep on a couch. The victim was able to fight suspect off, and he left her apartment in a hurry, leaving behind all of his clothes. After interviewing all involved parties, an investigator with the Special Victims Unit presented the case to a magistrate judge, who issued warrants on Childers for Burglary – 1st Degree and Assault with Intent to Commit Criminal Sexual Conduct – 2nd Degree. Because Childers is charged with Burglary – 1st Degree, a circuit court judge will have to set his bond on that charge. A magistrate can still set him a bond on the Attempted Criminal Sexual Conduct charge. The Special Victims Unit would like to thank the Spartanburg Methodist College Police Department for their assistance with this investigation.  Neither the victim or the suspect were residents at Campus Core Apartments.
