02/09/2013 - Former Spartanburg High School Teacher charged with Criminal Sexual Conduct with a Minor

The Special Victims Unit of the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office began an investigation on January 30, 2012, after a parent filed a report with this agency that she suspected there had been some inappropriate Facebook communication between her juvenile son and his science teacher at the Spartanburg High School Freshman Academy, located at 50 Emory Rd., Spartanburg, SC, 29307. That teacher was identified as Courtney Clark Kay, W/F, DOB: 011584, 113 Rosemary Rd., Spartanburg, SC, 29301. Officials with Spartanburg School District 7 were also notified of this parent’s complaint, they confronted Kay, and she resigned her teaching position that same day, January 30, 2012, after admitting she knew she had violated district policy regarding fraternization with students. As our investigation progressed, it was discovered that there had also been some inappropriate touching between this student and Kay. Earlier today, investigators approached Kay at her residence and asked her to come to the office for an interview. She agreed, and after several hours, Kay has confessed to the majority of the victim’s allegations. An investigator with the Special Victims Unit presented the findings of her investigation to a magistrate judge, who issued a warrant on Kay for Criminal Sexual Conduct with a Minor – 3rd degree.
